NEW! OA Abstinence and Recovery Definitions

Updated definitions of “abstinence” and “recovery” in Overeaters Anonymous were adopted at the 2019 World Service Business Conference. The revised policy states: The WSBC 2019 accepts the following definitions:

  1. Abstinence: The act of refraining from compulsive eating and compulsive food behaviors while working towards or maintaining a healthy body weight.
  2. Recovery: Removal of the need to engage in compulsive eating behaviors.

Spiritual, emotional, and physical recovery is achieved through working and living the Overeaters Anonymous Twelve Step program. (Business Conference Policy Manual, 1988b [amended 2019])

UNITY DAY ▪ Feb. 24 @ 11:30am

Unity Day recognizes the strength of the Fellowship worldwide. OA members pause on February 24th at 11:30 a.m. to reaffirm the strength inherent in OA’s unity.

Tradition One: “Our common welfare should come first; personal recovery depends upon OA unity.”

Unity with Diversity Statement: “As we extend the heart and hand of the OA Fellowship to those who still suffer, let us be mindful of OA’s Unity with Diversity policy, which respects our differences, yet unites us in the solution to our common problem. Whatever problem you may have with food, you are welcome at a meeting, regardless of race, creed, nationality, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, or any other trait.”

OA Promise: I put my hand in yours, and together we can do what we could never do alone. No longer is there a sense of hopelessness, no longer must we each depend upon our own unsteady willpower. We are all together now, reaching out our hands for power and strength greater than ours, and as we join hands, we find love and understanding beyond our wildest dreams.
