OA World Service is Asking Sponsors to Share Their Stories!

Give service to new and veteran OA sponsors by sharing your 250–300 word story about your sponsoring experience!

In a few months, OA will begin updating and reforming our current sponsorship literature and creating a new publication to provide guidance to sponsors who are challenged to meet the needs of our increasingly diverse Fellowship. We are asking all sponsors to share their experience, strength, and hope, and we have some great questions in our downloadable flyer for you to respond to. We need you to write about the ways you provide support and guidance to your sponsees, while keeping the focus on their recovery through the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions.

Do you know someone who is an OA sponsor? Share this flyer with them! (Here’s a B&W flyer with release form.) The deadline to submit your story is November 30, 2021.


Board of Trustees Vacancies

Dear OA Intergroups and Service Boards,

During the 2021 WSBC, three vacancies were declared on the Board of Trustees: two General Service Trustees and the Region Two Trustee. In accordance with the Bylaws of Overeaters Anonymous, the Board of Trustees may appoint a qualified member to serve through WSBC 2022. In order to best serve OA as a whole, it is important to make these appointments as quickly as possible.

A complete job description and application can be downloaded from oa.org. The completed applications may be emailed to info@oa.org or mailed to the attention of Sandy Zimmerman and must be received at the World Service Office by June 1, 2021. Please let it be known throughout your area that the Board of Trustees is soliciting qualified applicants who are willing to fill the positions. It is the intention of the board to appoint these new trustees as soon as possible after that date.

We are soliciting names to fill these vacancies through the end of WSBC 2022. If you should have any questions about this appointment process, please do not hesitate to contact the World Service Office.

First 12 Days – New Resource

OA World Service has a new resource for recovery & sponsorship!

“Sponsorship is a vital part of the OA recovery process, as it builds a tight-knit, trusting fellowship and invests purposefully in newcomers. To this end, our newest resource intends to bolster relationships with newcomers—and instill confidence in those new to sponsoring—by partnering those new to OA with a “temporary sponsor” to guide them through the pivotal first days of their OA journey. Stamp out feelings of intimidation about sponsorship and jump-start a newcomer’s experience with our helpful introduction to program.” —Read more at OA.org

The First Twelve Days in OA provides readings and discussion topics to…

  • Help newcomers, returning OA members, and other members learn about the OA Twelve Step recovery program by using this personal, short-term introduction to Overeaters Anonymous.
  • Help sponsees learn how the OA recovery program might help them to stop hurting themselves with food.
  • Help members who may be ready to sponsor but are reluctant to do so. This is an opportunity for a member to help a newcomer in a very structured way and to experience what it might be like to be a regular sponsor.

Our next steps | The survey was part of the process of developing a Strategic Plan for our intergroup and we have made significant progress in this direction. We will not be waiting for this pandemic to be over before we begin an expanded program of workshops and other activities to help fellows achieve our goal of recovery and integrating the 12 Step program into every aspect of our lives.

WSO Conference Questionnaire

The WSO Conference planning committee distributed an agenda questionnaire that CIIG is “entitled and urged” to return to let them know what we think WSO Conference delegates should spend time discussing. The questionnaire covers 22 issues, and is an agenda review, not a final vote on motions or amendments. The links below provide details about the questionnaire and the proposed motions.

  • Short summary of WSO Agenda Questionnaire (1 page) – overview of proposed motions, including new 12th Step Within Day, new definition of Abstinence, and new service requirements. Meeting reps can bring this short form to the next CIIG meeting to provide Yes/No vote preferences. To assist in determining which proposals may require referral to the Reference Subommittee, please write concerns or questions on the back of the sheet.
  • Agenda Questionnaire Letter (1 page) – Agenda questionnaire instructions
  • Agenda Questionnaire (7 pages) – Agenda questionnaire to be returned by service bodies only (March 5, 2009 postmarked deadline)
